HISTORIC TAVERNIER…

Ideally situated
between Key Largo and Islamorada is
the town of Tavernier, a Keys’
locale rich in history. It stretches from the southern end of the island of Key
Largo across Tavernier Creek onto Plantation Key. Early settlers and planters
called it home, the Florida East Coast Railroad stopped there and it was home
to an early 1900’s post office. The Spanish named it Cayo Tavona, the British
Tavernier and its rough translation in French is “tavern keeper.”
Today Tavernier is a lively residential and commercial
area offering Harry Harris County Park, Coral Shores
High School, Mariners (Baptist Health) Hospital, US Post Office, movie theatre,
shopping center, several hotels, restaurants, stores and taverns!
